Thank you ApexDrop and Cleveland Whiskey for gifting me Wheat Penny 1958 Bourbon Whiskey.
I don’t recall the first time I had a New York Sour, but I am sure I was intrigued by the cocktail description. This drink is a variation of a Whiskey Sour and perhaps one of my favorites. A New York Sour is essentially a whiskey sour (whiskey or bourbon, lemon, sugar and an optional egg white) with a dry, fruity red wine float.
This popular cocktail has few ingredients and can easily be made at home. You will need some basic bar tools- cocktail shaker, strainer, jigger and bar spoon. If you donβt already have these on hand, your best bet is to purchase a cocktail shaker kit. The ingredients are simple, but the quality of them will make or break this cocktail.
You want to start with a bourbon whiskey that you really enjoy (Iβve currently been partaking in Wheat Penny 1958). Grab yourself some fresh lemons and squeeze some fresh juice. Now you could buy a bottle of simple syrup, but itβs quite easy to make at home and a fraction of the cost (I always have some on hand for cocktails). This recipe usually calls for egg white, but it is totally optional. I always go for the egg white at bars, but for some reason I have been too timid to try it at home. The egg white does adds a nice frothy texture to the cocktail though.
Making the New York Sour requires 2 steps, but you will be impressed by the finished product. In the cocktail shaker, you will shake up the bourbon whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup and optional egg white. You want to get it nicely blended and chilled. You will then strain it in a rocks glass with ice (you can use the fancy cube or sphere cubes) and get ready for the magic step. The key to getting the red wine to float on top of bourbon mixture is to use the back of a bar spoon and pour slowly. Voila! That is it. Drink up and enjoy your cocktail creation.
