Must Have Gear for Your Next Waterfall Hike

In August, I went on my first waterfall hike, and I am now obsessed. I was visiting Guatemala, and there just so happened to be a hike just a brief walk from where I was staying in Tzununa . When I heard this hike led to a waterfall, I jumped at the opportunity. I had never been up close and personal with one before. Even though this hike was not on my original agenda, I was prepared. I came on this trip unsure of what adventures were in store, but I did know what to bring for possible outdoor activities- especially ones involving water.

If you reside in the United States, you may think that your opportunity for waterfall hikes is limited to international travel. However, there are so many places in the states you can visit for this type of outdoor adventure. No passport required! There may even be ones right in the state you live in. But before you go planning that trip, it’s important to have the right gear. You definitely want to bring items like sunscreen, insect repellent, and snacks. However, you will regret not bringing this list of must have gear.

I first obtained these items for a trip to Mexico. I had plans to visit Chichen Itza, and most excursions include a visit to a cenote. Not only are these items extremely useful for waterfall hikes, but also cenote swims and several other outdoor water activities. Read on for my 5 must have items!

Quick Drying Athletic Water Shoes

Lightweight, Durable Hiking Backpack

I think my favorite thing about this bag is that it folds into its own pocket making it super compact. It takes up little room in your suitcase but when unfolded is big enough to carry all of your things. There are various compartments. The nylon is tear and water resistant so it can take a bit of a beating. The straps are padded so comfort won’t be an issue.

Fast Drying Microfiber Towel

It goes without saying that you’ll need something to dry off with. But no one wants to tote around a wet towel that is prone to bacteria and mold. It’s super absorbent, soft and dries quickly. This microfiber towel comes with its own carrying case. Or you can store the wet towel in the waterproof, wet pocket of the hiking bag above.

Collapsible Water Bottler

Staying hydrated is a must! Reusable bottles are the way to go, but traditional ones can be bulky and take up too much space when traveling. This Nomader bottle is the solution. It is durable, leakproof, and is made with food-grade materials (so definitely BPA free!). It holds 20 oz of water and since it rolls up, you’ll probably want to pack more than one.

Waterproof Action Camera

What’s a waterfall hike if you aren’t capturing the moment? That other name brand action cam is quite pricey and doesn’t fit into most people’s budgets. Akasa is a much more affordable alternative.
