Old Fashioned

There are 2 drinks I usually order to gauge a bartender’s ability- a dirty martini and an old fashioned. Now, let’s be clear… I am NOT a bartender or mixologist. Just a gal that likes a tasty, well-made cocktail.

There is virtually no mixer in an Old Fashioned so it’s really important to use a good quality bourbon or rye. For this recipe, I used Buffalo Trace. However, I do also like it with Bulleit Rye. Feel free to use your favorite bourbon as long as it’s the good stuff.

If you are a regular whiskey or bourbon drinker and don’t have a Whiskey Ball or ice mold for a large spherical ice cube, look into getting one. They are relatively inexpensive. They are slower to melt than regular ice cubes and are a lovely addition to an Old Fashioned.

Total Time5 minutes
Course: Drinks
Keywords: bourbon, cocktails
Servings: 1

Equipment

  • Muddler

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2-3 dashes Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Bitters
  • 2 oz bourbon or rye
  • orange twist

Instructions

  • Place 1 tsp of granulated sugar in a rocks glass.
  • Top sugar with 2 dashes of bitters and muddle.
  • Pour about a 1/2 ounce of bourbon into the glass. Stir to start dissolving the sugar.
  • Add a whiskey ball or several ice cubes to the glass. Pour in another 1/2 ounce of bourbon and stir. The ice will help to continue dissolve the sugar.
  • Top off with remaining 1 ounce of bourbon and give it one final stir.
  • With orange rind facing the cocktail, gently squeeze to release oils. Line the rim of the glass with the rind and place peel in the glass.

Notes

  • 1 tsp simple syrup can be used in place of granulated sugar.
