3 Ingredient Homemade Lemon Pepper Seasoning

Love me some extra crispy lemon pepper wings… flats (that is not up for debate lol). I always struggled with making my sports bar fave at home because I really do not like store bought lemon pepper seasoning. They tend to be way too salty for my taste. Plus, the super artificial taste of lemon turns me off.

The solution to this problem was to make the seasoning myself. This requires only 3 ingredients. The hard part is zesting the lemons. The amount of lemons you use will really vary based on the size and if you want more or less of a lemon flavor. I would start with 3 and go from there. You can really adjust the lemon and pepper ratio to your liking. The recipe is really simple and the seasoning can be stored for up to a few months.

Equipment

  • spice grinder

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp lemon zest
  • 3 tbsp black pepper, freshly ground
  • salt

Instructions

  • Turn on toaster oven to the lowest setting.
  • Zest lemons until you have approximately 2 tbsp of zest.
  • Combine with freshly ground pepper.
  • Spread mixture onto a parchment or foil lined baking sheet. Bake in toaster oven until the lemon zest is completely dry (approximately 30 minutes). Check on the seasoning occasionally to make sure the zest doesn't burn.
  • Using a spice grinder, crush mixture until you reach the desired texture. Ideally you'd want a bit of a coarser texture so do not grind info a fine powder.
  • Add salt 1 tsp at a time until a suitable balance is reached.
  • Store in an airtight container or resealable bag.

Notes

  • The number of lemons used will vary on size of the lemons.
  • You can use more or less lemon zest or pepper depending on personal preference.Β
  • A clean coffee grinder or mortar and pestle can be used in place of a spice grinder.
