January 1st is not just New Year’s Day, but also National Bloody Mary Day. And apparently also National Hangover Day. Coincidence? I think not. It all makes sense to me. Hear me out. People are known to overindulge on New Year’s Eve which typically results in hangovers the next day. What’s a well known hangover remedy? A Bloody Mary!
Whether a Bloody Mary is needed to nurse a NYE hangover or to liven up a Sunday Funday, I am sure we can agree that a homemade mix is way better than a store bought one. Most store bought mixes are one note and lack depth of flavor. Others aren’t spicy enough for me. Bloody Mary mix can be as simple or complex as you wish. This particular recipe makes for a bold and spicy mix (my preference), but the great thing about making the mix from scratch is the ability to adjust the ingredients to your liking. Want it smoky? Add chipotle chili powder. Briny? Add more pickle juice.
Making the mix is super easy. It is a base of tomato juice poured into a lidded pitcher and mixed with the remaining ingredients. The spice comes from prepared horseradish and hot sauce (I prefer Louisiana brand for this). The boldness comes from Worcestershire sauce, Old Bay seasoning, Trader Joe’s Chili Lime seasoning, and freshly cracked black pepper. The remaining ingredients add some brininess to the mix and help balance the flavors: lemon juice, lime juice, pickle juice, and celery salt.
The is a non-alcoholic recipe for just the mix, but one is welcome to add the libation of their choice. Vodka is the preferred spirit for Bloody Marys, but tequila is a nice alternative for a Bloody Maria. Serve in a mason jar or your fave beer glass. You can go as wild as you’d like with garnishes. Some popular garnishes include celery sticks, pickled veggies, olives, and even bacon. You really can’t go wrong.
A pitcher with a lid is ideal because this Bloody Mary mix is better after sitting for several hours. Combine everything in the pitcher, pop the lid on, and let it sit in the fridge to let it work its magic. Overnight is best so it is suggested to make this a day in advance. However, it is still perfectly tasty if you consume it shortly after making it.
