One Night in Adams Morgan

Adams Morgan June 2019 (Washington, D.C.)

My mom always jokes that I have friends everywhere I visit. I do take trips to visit friends in various cities. But I also try to make time for them when I am in town for work. It doesn’t always happen but hey, I have good intentions!

On my recent trip to D.C., I was able to catch up with an old friend. In fact, one of the very first friends I made in college. You know *incoherent mumbles* years ago… mhmmm. That long ago. It is always an adventure despite the fact that we don’t see each other often. We had a solid 15 hours together… some of which we would need to spend sleeping. This was a Thursday after all and we both had to work in the a.m. That didn’t stop us from making the most of the limited time we had together.

My friend is a teacher so he was winding down for summer break. What better way to do so than with a rooftop party shindig with his colleagues? Sure there was rain in the forecast but rain schmain. A little water never hurt anyone (unless you’re the Wicked Witch of the West, of course). His rooftop has beautiful views of Washington, D.C. The view paired with cocktails and wings on the grill was a great start to the late Spring evening. We did have to run for cover after a brief storm, but that produced the most beautiful neon sunset (yes, I changed clothes)!

Wanting to make the most of our limited time together, we ventured out into the neighborhood. The first stop was Madam’s Organ Blues Bar, offering 4 levels of fun. You walk in on the 1st level which is where they have live entertainment. The 2nd floor is what they call Big Daddy’s Love Lounge & Pick-Up Joint (there is Drunkeoke on this level on certain nights). The 3rd floor is… well, I guess a small hangout spot which takes you to the 4th floor. This floor is a rooftop deck with tiki bar. There really is something for everyone here.

After a couple of drinks, we walked over to one of the gay bars in the ‘hood. The winner was A League of Her Own, a fun sports bar and safe space for queer women. Sidenote: This bar was opened from the same folks who opened Pitchers next door. We ordered a drink and got lured upstairs for the drag show featuring queens and kings. I don’t know how but my friend somehow convinced me to join him in the dance challenge. I figured these folks won’t see me again so why not? Plus we got a free drink out of it. I was the only woman dancing but I think I held my own against the fab guys I danced alongside.

I legit almost forgot I was on a work trip. We decided to call it a night after that since we both had some sort of work obligation the next day. I only had a few hours in the city but I love that we were able to turn it into a fun-filled adventure! Sometimes that is the way to go…. don’t have a plan. Just have a starting point and see where the night takes you. It may just turn into a very memorable evening!
