If you know me IRL (in real life) or have follow me on Instagram, you know that I am a hard seltzer fan. I have been for a few years now. It started with White Claws, but as the market grew, I made it my mission to try as many as I could. It kinda became my thing. My neighbors would bring new seltzers they would find to the pool so we could try them. I get sent photos of seltzers found in stores that people think I haven’t tried yet. If a local brewery has a seltzer on tap, I am ordering it. I have even gone to Seltzerland twice (and survived) just so I could indulge in all things hard seltzers.
You may be wondering why hard seltzers are so popular. I am no expert, but I am pretty sure it has to do with the low calories and carbs, little to no sugar, and ease of drinking with ABVs comparable to beer. These days it is like everyone has brand has some form of hard seltzer. They all want to get in where they can fit in with the market. I totally get it- they’re so “in” right now. I haven’t tried them all, but I have tried a lot. And despite what you may think, they aren’t all the same. Some are heavy on the carbonation, others get creative with flavor combinations, some have a cleaner taste than others… the list goes on and on. There are a lot of hard seltzer I like, but I wanted to narrow down my favorites. This list is especially for those of you who are overwhelmed with the variety of hard seltzers, and want a good starting point.
Read on to find out my top 5 hard seltzers of 2022 (in no particular order).
I was first introduced to PRESS by a neighbor and loved it ever since. The flavors are more sophisticated than others which I appreciate. They have flavors like Pomegranate Ginger (my fave), Grapefruit Cardomom, and even Pear Chamomile. They have been voted Best Tasting Seltzer at Seltzerland a number of times so they’re doing something right. I find them easier to drink because they seem to less carbonated and have a lower ABV. That’s right- PRESS is only 4% ABV. This is not one you are going to drink just for the sake of getting a buzz. It also doesn’t have that malt liquor taste that may find with other seltzers. This is a hard seltzer you want to take the time to sip and enjoy, and if you’re into mocktails, PRESS would make the perfect base.
Most of my friends would not be shocked that Vizzy made my favorite list. I drink Vizzy more than any other hard seltzer. If you see me at the pool and scope out my BruMate, chances are this is what can you’ll find in it. I was first drawn in by the advertisement of Antioxidant Vitamin C from Acerola Superfruit. To me this meant I would feel less guilty downing several of these by the pool because “you know, I’m getting in some Vitamin C so it’s not so bad”. I dig the flavor combinations and they now have 5 variety packs. Their newest one is a Mimosa Hard Seltzer pack, but I stand by Variety Pack 2 which has unique flavors like Papaya Passionfruit. They are 5 % ABV, 100 calories and have antioxidants. What’s not to like?
Topo Chico is a sparkling mineral water with a strong following. So when they announced they were branding out into the hard seltzer game, fans were excited. Me being one of them. Topo Chico Hard Seltzers didn’t stray too far from their brand by adding mineral water for taste. I think their regular hard seltzers are good, but for my favorites list I wanted to specifically highlight their margarita hard seltzers. They are have a little lower ABV at 4.5%, but I’m ok with that. These play on my love for margaritas and are crisp, a little tart and really refreshing. If I had to pick a favorite in the bunch, it would definitely be the Prickly Pear.
If my memory is correct, Bon Viv is another hard (or spiked as they like to call it) seltzer I was introduced to by a neighbor. Since then they have gone through a bit of a rebranding, but I personally prefer the old box and cans. Unlike the other 3 hard seltzers so far on this list, Bon Viv does offer more standard, simple favors. These are for you if you don’t want to get crazy with the flavor combinations, but still want a crisp, good tasting drink. If you ask me which I would reach for first, it’s actually in a different variety pack from the one pictured. It is a Pear Elderflower Spiked Seltzer. What can I say? I like creative flavor profiles. Bon Viv Spiked Seltzers have ZERO sugar, 90 calories and are 4.5% ABV. Whether you go basic or get a little fancy with your choice, these are a solid pick.
The final hard seltzer on my favorites list in Wild Basin. This boozy sparkling water is crafted and canned by Oskar Blue Brewery based in Colorado. When I started my hard seltzer journey a friend recommended this, and I am glad she did. Wild Basin uses water from the St. Vrain River along with natural flavors. They offer an Original pack, a Tea Mix and a Berry Mix. I hate to admit this, but I have only tried the OG pack. However, it is good enough to make my list. Melon Basil is my go to but I have been eyeing the newer Yuzu Pineapple. Similar to most, Wild Basin has 100 calories, 5% ABV and is vegan and gluten free. If you check out their website, you can find fun cocktails to make with their boozy water.
