8 Ways to Support Local Restaurants during COVID-19

Restaurants far and wide are feeling the impact of COVID-19. News of closures of our local restaurants is sadly becoming more common. If you have been ordering food during the past 6 months, that is a great start. Financial support is always a win. However, in these times, we have to do a little more to help keep the doors open to our fave eateries.

So, the question is “What more can we do to support restaurants (and other local businesses) during this pandemic?”. Every little bit of assistance is appreciated and some ways in which you can help won’t cost you a dime.

  1. Order takeout or curbside pickup. Want to enjoy your favorite dishes but in the comfort of your home? Delivery companies charge the restaurant for their services, and it ain’t cheap. Because of this, I encourage picking up orders to help minimize those costs. Throw on a mask and pick up directly from the restaurant. With curbside pickup as an option, you don’t even have to leave your car.
  2. Tip a little extra. First of all, you should always tip when you dine out. This isn’t a debatable topic so don’t go there. If you are engaging in socially distanced (and masked) dining out, consider tipping a little more than you usually would. I challenge you to even tip when ordering delivery or takeout. Some restaurants have not resumed dine in service so the thoughtfulness will be greatly appreciated.
  3. Buy gift cards or merch! Some restaurants have been running gift card promotions and have released branded merchandise to help bring in some extra income. Buy them as a gift or use them yourself. Whichever you choose, it’s another great way to support!
  4. Write a positive review. First, remember to be understanding and patient. Now more than ever as restaurants are dealing with intense stress right now. Write a review on Yelp, Google or Facebook. Focus on the positive and what you liked, recommend dishes and encourage others to dine with the establishment.
  5. Engage on their social media. Follow them on Instagram, like their Facebook page, and engage with them. This doesn’t mean just liking their posts. See something you like? Comment! Did they share a happy hour special? Share it and save it! Do all of these things because it will help them to reach a larger audience.
  6. Share the restaurant with others. I am part of a couple of Facebook groups, and I regularly see posts of people asking for places to eat. They may be craving something new or want to know which restaurants are adhering to CDC considerations. Share your fave spots with your circle because now is not the time to hold out on your hidden gems.
  7. Donate or give what you can. You can do this through funds created specifically to offer employees assistance or virtual tip jars. It sounds cliche but every little bit matters.
  8. Stay home if you are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19. This is a no-brainer. Don’t put anyone else at risk if you aren’t feeling well. It does them no good if they have to temporarily shut down due to an employee testing positive for COVID-19. And if you are dining at an establishment, wear your mask to protect you and others.

My hope is that if we all play a part and actively support our local eateries, we can keep them alive. Have ideas to add to the list? Leave a comment!
