This is probably not a typical post you’d expect from me. However, if you follow me on Instagram, you would notice I post about self-care in my stories and talk about it at times on feed posts. Self-care is important to me so I had the idea to share some of my personal thoughts on it. I am no expert on this topic. These personal thoughts are just my opinions. The goal is to hopefully inspire you to find time for self-care (and also to remind myself to do the same especially when life gets hectic).
Self-care is more than just a trending hashtag or a fleeting indulgence. It’s the intentional and conscious act of taking care of your own well-being, both physically and mentally. I sometimes think of it like giving yourself a big, warm hugβmetaphorically speaking, of course. In a world that often glorifies being busy, embracing self-care becomes a powerful act of reclaiming your time, energy, and overall happiness. Self-care involves recognizing your own needs and actively engaging in activities or practices that promote balance, relaxation, and overall health.
Self-care looks different from person to person. It can take various forms, depending on what resonates with you. It could be anything from taking a relaxing bath, practicing meditation, reading a book, going for a walk, or even just taking a break to enjoy a cup of tea. I do not consider it a luxury. It’s a vital aspect of maintaining a healthy and fulfilling life. The key is to make time for activities that rejuvenate and nurture you. Self-care can help you navigate the challenges of daily life with a greater sense of resilience and calm, and who doesn’t need that?
Finding time for self-care can be challenging for several reasons. It can be due having a busy schedule or feeling like you don’t have enough time, lacking boundaries, or feeling guilty for taking time for yourself. Overcoming these challenges usually involves a shift in mindset, recognizing that self-care is not selfish but essential for your overall well-being. It may also require intentional planning, setting boundaries, and communicating your needs to those around you. It may not always seem easy to find time for self-care but it is doable. Here are 5 ways you can make time for self-care.
Self-care doesn’t need to be this long, drawn out activity. Taking 10-15 minutes a day can make a significant difference over time. Maybe you spend part of your lunch break taking a short walk, practicing breathing techniques, or doing a mindfulness exercise. I have dedicated a little time before bed for some reading. That’s all it takes to get started. Start with manageable increments and gradually increase as you see fit.
Combine your self-care with other daily routines. I enjoy listening to music so I do this while getting ready or while cooking myself a meal. Integrating self-care into existing activities makes it feel less like an additional task and more like a seamless part of your routine.
It’s okay to ask for help. Delegate tasks at home or work when possible. This creates space for you to focus on self-care without feeling guilty about neglecting other duties.
No is not a bad word. I know it may be difficult to do, but learn to say no when necessary. Setting clear boundaries with work, social obligations, or even technology can create space for self-care. It’s okay to prioritize your well-being and decline activities that might overwhelm you.
Treat self-care as a non-negotiable appointment. Block off time in your calendar dedicated solely to self-care activities. I enjoy being able to step away from my desk to enjoy my lunch in peace. If I see my schedule starting to fill up with calls and meetings, I block off time for a lunch break. This small adjustment makes a big difference for me. If you schedule time for self-care, you’re more likely to prioritize it amidst your busy schedule.
I encourage you to embrace this intentional approach, making self-care a non-negotiable priority. Your ability to show up fully for others and navigate life’s challenges is dependent on the foundation of a well-cared-for self. There may be periods of inconsistency, but that’s ok. Have some grace with yourself. You’re doing your best, and that’s what really matters. So, let’s commit to scheduling those moments of rejuvenation, recognizing that in caring for ourselves, we empower ourselves to lead more balanced, fulfilling lives.
